Standards of Written Work

Major Papers or writing assignments in all classes should adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Work should be word-processed, proofread, and spell checked before submission for a grade.
  2. Writing should be clearly organized and include the use of an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
    • The introductory paragraph should consist of four to seven sentences that overview the topic of the thesis.
    • Several body paragraphs, each with seven to fourteen sentences, comprise the basis text of the paper. Each body paragraph has an introductory sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion.
    • The concluding paragraph of four to seven sentences should be consistent with the introductory paragraph.
  3. All submissions should include documentation of sources (textual and visual) and works cited. We use the standard MLA format- copies of WRITING REFERENCE are available in the English Department.
  4. The use of study aids such as Cliff Notes, Monarch Notes and Spark notes are not acceptable alternatives or substitutes for assigned reading.
  5. Language mechanics are an important aspect of all papers, and may be included in all the grading of any or all written work in your courses.
  6. Homework is required of all students as an integral part of their course work. Homework standards, procedures, and criteria for credit will be established and administered within each department consistent with course objectives and recognizing differences in maturity, needs, interests, and abilities at each learning level. Each teacher will communicate these standards and criteria for credit to their students at the beginning of every course.
  7. Academic Planners are provided for all students in an effort to help them organize their school assignments. Students are to carry their planner to class on a daily basis. If a planner is lost or stolen, students will be responsible for replacement.
